On Thursday at 5:21pm, Anthropic got a letter from the US government.
A few hours later, the most advanced AI model in the world was switched off for everyone outside America. Including the foreign engineers who work at Anthropic.
It was an export control directive. National security. It told Anthropic to cut off Fable 5 and Mythos 5, their two strongest models, for any foreign national.. anywhere on the planet, even ones living inside the US.
You can't really half-follow an order like that. To make sure no foreigner could use it, Anthropic had to switch both models off for everyone. Americans included. Their best model, dark for all their customers, because of who might be on the other end.
I'm one of the people who lost it. I opened Fable 5 and it was just gone.
